Seasonal Depression across the Shrink Network.

The depression that tracks the calendar, covered from every angle.

Reviewed by Shariq Refai, MD, MBA

Seasonal depression (formally called Major Depressive Disorder with Seasonal Pattern, often abbreviated SAD) is a depression that tracks the light cycle. Symptoms begin in late fall, peak in the darkest months, and remit in spring. The pattern is consistent year over year. For people with classic SAD, the cluster of symptoms is recognizable enough that they often know it's coming before it arrives.

SAD has a specific feature profile that distinguishes it from year-round depression. Where typical depression often involves insomnia and appetite loss, SAD involves hypersomnia (sleeping much more than usual) and hyperphagia (eating more, especially carbohydrates). Energy is profoundly low. Social withdrawal is heavy. The cluster matches an evolutionary hibernation profile, which is part of why it's thought to track the light cycle.

Each site in the Shrink Network covers seasonal depression from a different angle. Shrinkopedia provides the clinical reference. DepressionResource provides the Seasonal Depression Map. PsychiatryRx covers the medications, including bupropion XL which has FDA approval specifically for prevention. shrinkMD provides the care option. This cluster page collects all seven layers.

Seasonal depression is one of the depression subtypes with the most specific evidence-based treatment paths. Bright light therapy, when started in early fall, can prevent the cluster from developing. The combination of light therapy and bupropion XL handles the majority of cases. The cluster above is the network's full coverage in one place, so the work of planning around a predictable seasonal pattern has all the resources in one stop.
