Differential diagnosis is the working list of conditions a clinician considers before settling on one. It's how the DSM criteria get used in practice: not by matching a person to the first plausible label, but by naming the alternatives and ruling them in or out. It's the clinical opposite of a Google search that returns the scariest thing first.
